Dendrocalamus membranaceus is one of the relatively drought-resistant clumping bamboos in the Dendrocalamus. It can grow well at annual precipitation of 700 mm while other Dendrocalamus species require a minimum of 1000 mm above. In China, it's mainly found in Southern Yunnan province.

It grows to 7-10 cm in diameter, 8-15 m in height. Its poles are shipped to local pulp mills for pulp making. Dry shoot and pickled shoot are also found from this species in local diets.
